| The Chevrolet Chevelle debuted in 1964 and was one of General Motors’ most popular models until 1977, when the A-Body platform was used for the Monte Carlo. Built to compete with the Ford Fairlane, the Chevelle was offered as a four-door sedan, a station wagon, a two-door hardtop, and a two-door convertible. When the muscle car wars broke out in the early ‘60s, GM used the Chevelle as their ticket into the battle in 1966 with the Chevelle SS396. The SS396 lasted until 1969 where the SS package became an option along with air conditioning or AM/FM radio. In 1969 and 1970, the SS option included the 396/402 big block V8 as the base engine for the performance inspired driver. When the 1971 model appeared in showrooms, the SS option was more appearance than performance, and any optional V8 engine was available with the SS.
1971 was also a definitive year for General Motors, as all divisions were required to design their engines to run on lower octane fuels. This change came with strict new emission requirements and the anticipation of the catalytic converter that would start to be production items on all exhaust systems in 1975. Some of the design changes included lower compression ratios and unfortunately lower horsepower ratings. This left the LS5 454 c.i. V8 with a 365 gross/270 net horsepower rating.
Mid 1971 and 1972 model Chevelle’s offered a “Heavy Chevy” package that included a special stripe package and other appearance items. A “Heavy Chevy” could be ordered with any available V8 engine except the 454 c.i, which was only available with the SS package. The Chevelle was a very popular vehicle for many consumers as it was an economical family car, a king of the street racing circuits, and it was equipped with all the creature comforts such as power steering and brakes, air conditioning, and a stereo radio.
On display at Benchmark Classics is a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS recreation. This car has it all – a 454 cubic inch V8 big block monster, TH400 automatic transmission, a 12-bolt rear end with sway bar, and a nasty Flowmaster exhaust system that will let the soccer mom in the minivan next to you at the stoplight know you mean business! The drive train boasts many performance upgrades, including exhaust headers, auxiliary transmission oil cooler, B&M ratchet shifter, and electric fans to keep the 454 running cool. The exterior is that famous red with white super sport stripes, cowl induction hood, and rally wheels with Dunlop white letter tires. The grille has also been painted to match the body color. The interior is in excellent condition. All trim panels; dash pad, and etc. look awesome! Autometer gauges have been added and installed below the instrument panel to ensure proper oil pressure, coolant temperature, and battery voltage. An Autogage tachometer has been mounted to the steering column so you can see the RPM’s this monster is pulling down while your cruising this machine to your favorite car show, cruise night, or drag strip. There has also been an aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo installed with Sony X-plod speakers in the rear shelf and kick panels so you can enjoy your favorite tunes over the big block V8 and Flowmaster mufflers.
